note

Viewing archives displays their directory tree, allowing you to preview files in the Vault without needing to connect to your virtual machine.

info

Viewing a file for the first time may prompt you to enter your password.

The preview header reads "Viewing file name of size size". View is offered when one file is selected, you can download files, and the file's project is active in your session and lets you view files. Double-clicking a file, or pressing Enter on it, opens the same preview.

Supported File Types

The preview picks a viewer from the file's type. When the Vault has no type stored for a file, the type comes from the file name's extension. The following table describes the viewers.

File typeViewer
Images: bmp, gif, jpg, png, svg, tiff, 3dsShown as an image. Whether TIFF and 3DS files display depends on your browser.
PDFThe PDF viewer described below. Scripts inside the PDF do not run.
Markdown (.md)Rendered as formatted text.
JSONA read-only tree that you can sort and search.
Plain text (.txt)Plain text.
Other text filesText with syntax highlighting, up to 128 KB. Larger files show as plain text.
ZIP and tiCrypt inbox archives (.tia)The archive viewer. See View ZIP Archives.
Audio: mp3, wav, aifAn audio player.
Video: mp4, webm, ogvThe video player. These files stream, so playback starts before the whole file is decrypted.
Video: flv, mkv, 3gp, mpg, movThe video player, after the whole file is decrypted. Playback works only if your browser supports the format.
Any other filetiCrypt asks the browser to display it. If the browser cannot, the preview shows "This file type cannot be previewed." and a Download button.

Files larger than 1 GiB cannot be previewed, except videos that stream.

  2. Click the My Files section on the left panel.
  3. Select the ZIP archive you want to view.
  4. Click View in the top panel.
  5. In the left panel, use the Directory tree to navigate through the archive.
  6. In the right panel, use the Search button to find keywords in the archive.
  7. In the top panel, use the Ascend and Descend to sort files in the archive by Name, Last Modified, and Size.
  8. Once you have viewed the archive, click the close button in the top left corner.

The search box reads "Search all files within folder..." and searches every file name in the archive. The result line reads "No results", "One result", "Showing all n results", or "Showing top 200 results" when there are more. Collapse all closes every folder in the archive tree. Clicking a file inside the archive opens its own preview.

The archive viewer also opens tiCrypt inbox archives (.tia files). For a .tia file, the preview header has an Extract button that recreates the archive's folders in a Vault folder and adds its files to them:

  1. Click Extract in the preview header.
  2. In the Select directory to extract into prompt, choose the destination folder.
  3. Click Extract.

The task tray shows the task "Extract file". If you click Extract without choosing a folder, the prompt shows "You must select a directory".

Confirmations, Errors & Solutions
Cannot View File (Password-Protected)

Failed to access file: Encrypted zip are not supported

Open the Archive Inside a Virtual Machine

The Vault viewer previews an archive's directory tree; it cannot supply an archive password. Open the archive in a VM instead, where the password and the extracted contents both stay inside the enclave.

  1. Transfer the archive from the Vault to a running virtual machine. See VM File Operations.
  2. Open the archive inside the VM, supplying the password there. Which applications an image contains is decided by the administrator who prepared it, so if yours has no tool that can open the archive, ask which images do.
  3. Extract to a location under /drives/ so the contents persist after the machine stops.

Do not download the archive, remove its password, and re-upload it. That writes the decrypted contents to your local machine, which leaves tiCrypt's protection entirely, and the re-uploaded copy no longer carries the protection the original had.

Select File View

  1. Go to the Vault icon in the top left panel.
  2. Click the My Files section on the left panel.
  3. Select the file you want to view.

  5. Once you have viewed the file, click the Show files button in the top right corner.
  6. In the right panel, select other files you want to view from your vault.
  7. Use the left-right arrows to navigate through your file view.
  8. Once you have viewed all files, click the close button in the top left corner.

Show files becomes Hide files while the list is open. The tooltips of the arrows mention Shift+P and Shift+N, but those keys move between files only in the video player.

Play Videos

The video player has play and pause, volume, the current time, Buffer size (16 KB to 2 MB), Skip back 15s and Skip forward 15s, a playback speed from 0.25x to 10x, and Fullscreen. Clicking the time copies it and shows "Timestamp copied to clipboard".

The following keys work while a video is open:

  • Left and Right: seek back or forward 3 seconds.
  • Shift+Left and Shift+Right: seek back or forward 30 seconds.
  • Space: pause or resume.
  • Shift+P and Shift+N: open the previous or next file.
