Notifications and Tasks

ResearcherRequires: User, Sub-admin, Admin, or Super-admin role

A notification is a message tiCrypt stores on your account when another user does something that involves you: shares a file with you, adds you to a group or removes you from one, or sends you or a team, project, or group you belong to a message. A task is an operation you started that runs in the background, such as an upload, a download, or a transfer, and the task tray is the panel that lists them while they run. Notifications are about other people's actions and stay on your account; tasks are about your own actions and live only in the tiCrypt window that started them. Neither is a pop-up message. Pop-ups report the result of something you did and disappear after a few seconds; you can review recent ones in Message History.

Why notifications and tasks exist

Sharing in tiCrypt is silent otherwise. When a colleague shares a file with you, it appears under Shared With Me, but nothing would tell you to look there. A notification tells you who shared what, when, and how large it is, so you do not have to check every folder.

Encrypted file operations take time, and they run in your browser. tiCrypt encrypts and decrypts files on your computer, so a large upload or download can run for minutes. The task tray shows progress, lets you cancel, and keeps a log of what each task did, so a failure leaves a record you can read or send to your administrator.

Closing the window stops your tasks. Because tasks run in the tiCrypt window, reloading or closing it cancels them. The task tray is how you know whether it is safe to close the window.

When to use them

  • Check the notifications panel: open it when the bell shows a count, or when you expect a colleague to share files with you.
  • Clear all notifications: use Close all when you have read everything and want the panel and the count to start empty.
  • Watch the task tray: follow a long upload, download, or transfer there, and cancel it if you need to.
  • Read a task's log: open it when a task fails or ends with a warning.
  • Hide the task tray: hide it when it covers something you need. It reopens on its own when you start a new task.

Before you begin

  • You are signed in to tiCrypt.

Read your notifications

  1. In the toolbar, click the Notifications button. A badge on it shows how many notifications you have.
  2. In the Notifications panel, read the notifications. They are grouped by day, newest first, under "Today" or the full date, and each shows its date and time.
  3. To close the panel, click outside it.
Result:

The panel lists every notification from the last three months that you have not cleared. Older notifications are archived automatically.

The tiCrypt browser tab also shows the count, for example "(3) Vault - tiCrypt". When a new notification arrives while you are signed in, it also appears as a pop-up.

The following table describes the kinds of notification.

NotificationWhat happened
"sender sent you a message"A user sent a message to you. The message text appears below.
"sender sent a message to recipients"A user sent a message to a team, project, or group you belong to, or to all users of a role. The message text appears below.
"sender shared a file with you"A user shared one file with you. The file name, size, and owner appear below.
"sender shared n files with you"A user shared several files with you at once.
"sender shared file with group"A user shared a file with a group you belong to.
"sender added you to group"A user added you to a group.
"sender removed you from group"A user removed you from a group.

Message text appears exactly as it was written. Formatting and links in a message are shown as plain text and are not clickable.

If no notifications are left, the panel reads "You have no notifications" and "Notifications older than 3 months are archived automatically".

Clear all notifications

  1. Open the Notifications panel.
  2. Click Close all.
Result:

The panel is empty and the badge disappears. tiCrypt saves this on your account, so the cleared notifications stay hidden on every computer you sign in from. New notifications still arrive.

Follow and manage tasks

The task tray opens on its own when you start a task, such as an upload, download, transfer, or deletion. It is titled Tasks.

Each task shows its title and how long it has run, its current step, and either its progress as a percentage or, for an action you can still undo, a countdown in seconds.

The following table describes the buttons on a task.

ButtonWhen it appearsWhat it does
CancelWhile the task runsStops the task.
Undo pending actionDuring the countdown before an action takes effectCancels the action before it happens.
DismissAfter the task finishesRemoves the task from the tray.

To manage the tray:

  1. To remove every finished task at once, click Clear finished tasks in the tray header.
  2. To hide the tray, click Hide task tray. While tasks exist, a Show tasks button appears in the toolbar next to the notifications bell.
  3. To show the tray again, click Show tasks, or press T.
Result:

The tray shows or hides as you choose. It opens again on its own when you start a new task, and it is hidden while your session is locked.

T is a single-key shortcut. If you turned single-key shortcuts off in User Settings, use the Show tasks button instead.

Read a task's log

  1. In the task tray, click the task.
  2. In the dialog, read the log. If the task failed, its error appears at the top.
  3. To narrow the list, type in the Filter logs... field.
Result:

The dialog shows a Timestamp and Message for each entry the task logged. A task that logged nothing shows "No Logs to Show" and "Any errors or other information the task logs will appear here."

What happens next

Tasks run only in the tiCrypt window that started them. If you reload the page with Ctrl+R (Cmd+R on macOS) while tasks are running, tiCrypt asks first: "Refresh while tasks are running?" with the number of tasks in progress, for example "You have 2 tasks in progress. Refreshing will cancel them." Click Refresh anyway only if you accept losing those tasks.
