Keyboard and Navigation

ResearcherRequires: User, Sub-admin, Admin, or Super-admin role

A keyboard shortcut is a key, or a combination of keys, that runs a tiCrypt command without the mouse: locking your session, opening the logout dialog, showing the task tray, or searching the documentation. tiCrypt has two kinds. Single-key shortcuts use one character key, such as T, and you can turn them off. Modifier shortcuts use Ctrl, Alt, or Cmd together with another key, and they always work. Shortcuts apply across tiCrypt; the Vault file list and the video player add their own keys, described on their pages.

Why keyboard shortcuts exist

Locking and leaving should take one gesture. When you step away from your desk, the fastest safe action is Ctrl+Shift+P, which locks tiCrypt at once. A shortcut makes the safe habit the easy one.

Not everyone uses a mouse. Keyboard users and screen reader users need every main action reachable from the keyboard, and a way to jump past the toolbar to the page content.

Single keys can fire by accident. Speech input software types letters, and a stray key press can trigger a one-key command. That is why single-key shortcuts can be turned off while modifier shortcuts keep working.

When to use them

  • Lock your session: press Ctrl+Shift+P whenever you leave your computer, even briefly.
  • List the shortcuts: press ? to see the shortcuts that work on the current page.
  • Turn off single-key shortcuts: do this if you use speech input or keep triggering commands by accident.
  • Zoom: change the zoom when text is too small or too large for your screen.
  • Search the documentation: press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on macOS) to look something up without leaving tiCrypt.

Before you begin

  • You are signed in to tiCrypt. Shortcuts marked "Connect only" work only in the tiCrypt Connect Application, not in a web browser.

Use keyboard shortcuts

The following table describes the shortcuts available everywhere in tiCrypt. On macOS, Ctrl+Shift+P and Ctrl+Shift+L use the Control key.

KeysAction
?Shows the list of shortcuts. Single-key shortcut.
TShows or hides the task tray. Single-key shortcut.
Ctrl+Shift+PLocks your session at once. See Session Lock.
Ctrl+Shift+LOpens the Log out dialog.
Alt+Left / Alt+RightSwitches between the main sections: Vault, Management, and Virtual Machines.
Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on macOS)Opens the documentation search.
Ctrl+R (Cmd+R on macOS)Reloads the page. If tasks are running, tiCrypt asks first, because reloading cancels them.
Ctrl+= / Ctrl+- (Cmd on macOS)Zooms in or out, up to four steps each way. Ctrl or Cmd with the mouse wheel also zooms.
Ctrl+Alt+B (Cmd+Option+B on macOS)Opens tiCrypt in your web browser. Connect only.
Ctrl+W (Cmd+W on macOS)Closes the window. Connect only.
Esc, then TabEsc leaves the field or control you are in; the next Tab moves focus to the first control on the page.

When the zoom level is not 100%, the toolbar shows the current percentage.

Result:

The command runs. The list that ? shows includes each shortcut's description as tiCrypt names it, for example "Locks Session" or "Toggle tasks".

Turn single-key shortcuts off or on

Location: Open user menu > User Settings

  1. In the User settings dialog, under Keyboard shortcuts, turn the Single-key keyboard shortcuts switch off or on.
  2. Click Close.
Result:

The change applies immediately and is saved on your account, so it follows you to every computer. With the switch off, one-key shortcuts such as T and ? do nothing; shortcuts with Ctrl, Alt, or Cmd keep working. The switch is on by default.

After you sign in, the first time you press Tab on any page, a Skip to main content link appears. It is hidden until it has focus.

  1. Press Tab once.
  2. Press Enter on Skip to main content.
Result:

Keyboard focus moves past the toolbar to the main content of the page.

Search the documentation

The documentation search looks up tiCrypt documentation pages and opens them inside tiCrypt.

  1. Press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on macOS).
  2. Type in the Search documentation ... field.
  3. Move through the results with the Up and Down arrow keys, and press Enter to open one, or click it.
Result:

The page opens in a Help panel inside tiCrypt. You can minimize the panel and come back to it, or close it with Esc.

Before you type, the search lists your Recent searches. Press Backspace on a highlighted entry to remove it. With no history, it shows "No recent searches"; with no match, it shows "No results for" followed by your text. Both states also offer Useful pages: links to recent releases, the general overview, and the guide to using tiCrypt, and the footer has a Documentation link. Press Esc to close the search.

When you cannot copy text

Your administrator decides which roles may copy text out of tiCrypt, in the Copy Settings system setting. By default, nobody can. If your role is not allowed:

  • You cannot select text in tiCrypt.
  • Ctrl+C (Cmd+C on macOS) does nothing.
  • In a VM terminal, the copy and paste shortcuts do nothing, and a pop-up reads "Clipboard access is disabled for your account. Contact your administrator."

This is a data-protection policy, not a fault. If your work requires copying, ask your administrator.
