Licensing Servers

Prerequisites

User Role:

Super-admin

Permission Requirements

None. tiCrypt accepts licensing server requests only from super-admins, and the table is hidden from every other role. The View, Create, Edit and Delete licensing servers permissions do not give access to this page.

A licensing server entry is an allowlist rule. tiCrypt VMs have no outbound network access, so software inside a VM cannot reach a license server, a Windows KMS host or any other service on your network by default. Each entry lets every VM reach one server on the listed ports and protocol. For example, Windows VMs need an entry for the KMS host, and Windows VMs used over Remote Desktop need one for the RD license server.

note

The tiCrypt backend applies these rules only when licensing-server-driver is set to firewalld in the tiCrypt VM service configuration. With the default value, none, entries are saved but VMs still cannot reach the servers.

Access the Licensing Servers in the Management

  1. Go to the Management icon in the top left taskbar.
  2. Navigate to the Virtual Machines section.
  3. Click the Licensing Servers in the left panel.
  4. In the list, view each licensing server's server address, ports, protocol, active status, group, deactivation date, creator, and creation date.

View the Basic Information of a Licensing Server

  1. Go to the Management icon in the top left taskbar.
  2. Navigate to the Virtual Machines section.
  3. Click the Licensing Servers in the left panel.
  4. Select the licensing server to view basic information.
  5. Click the View button in the top right panel.
  6. In the left panel, under the Basic info subsection, view the server, ports, protocol, active status, deactivation date, owner, group, creation date, and ID.

Create a New Licensing Server

  1. Go to the Management icon in the top left taskbar.
  2. Navigate to the Virtual Machines section.
  3. Click the Licensing Servers in the left panel.
  4. Click the Create new licensing server button in the top right panel.
  5. In the Register a new licensing server pop-up, under Server, enter the domain name or IPv4 address of the licensing server, such as license.example.com or 10.0.0.5.
  6. Under Ports, enter at least one port or port range, such as 80 or 8000-8010. Type a comma or press Enter after each one. A range is added as one chip per port. Ports are whole numbers from 1 to 65,535.
  7. Under Protocol, select the protocol the licensed software uses: TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) or UDP (User Datagram Protocol). Check the software vendor's documentation; for example, Windows KMS and RD licensing both use TCP.
  8. Under Group (optional), type a group name or pick an existing group from the suggestions.
  9. Under Deactivate on (optional), choose the date the entry stops applying. Leave it empty for servers that VMs always need.
  10. Click Register server.
info

Each registration adds one licensing server with one protocol. To register several servers, or a server that needs both TCP and UDP, repeat these steps for each one. If a port or range is not valid, such as 70000 or 8010-8000, the error shows under Ports and Register server stays inactive.

note
  • Entries cannot be edited. To change an entry, delete it and register it again.
  • Groups are metadata tags that help you sort and find related entries. They do not change which VMs can reach the server.
  • Open only the ports the software needs. Every entry applies to all VMs.

Re-Sync Rules in a Licensing Server

bulk-action

  1. Go to the Management icon in the top left taskbar.
  2. Navigate to the Virtual Machines section.
  3. Click the Licensing Servers in the left panel.
  4. Click the Re-sync rules button in the top right panel.

Registering or deleting an entry updates the VM network rules right away. Re-sync rules rewrites the rules from all active entries. Use it when VMs cannot reach a server that has a correct, active entry.

Refresh View of a Licensing Server

bulk-action

  1. Go to the Management icon in the top left taskbar.
