How do I back up a project?
Premeditation
Projects may contain sensitive information and should be handled in project-tagged environments. The backup keeps a copy of user accounts, teams, and projects recorded in the backup system.
Principle
Suppose your data center went on fire and all the physical servers are completely lost. You should already have a distinct remote location where you would stock your backups on magnetic tapes, for instance.
In case a project member leaves the project or leaves the institution, files remain in the backup system.
The backup process is access-controlled
and does not rely on the user's encryption keys
. It can back up objects such as user accounts, teams, or projects independently.
Practice
You cannot backup a project, but you can create a backup object out of the project, which will be automatically backed up by the system.
Short Workflow
To create a new backup object, navigate to the tab in the Backup Objects
section.
- Click the
Create New Backup Object
button in the top right. - Follow the instructions from the create backup object section.
Your project is now backed up. Any member who leaves the project will have the data saved in the backup system. Depending on your institution, you may customize the retainment data period to an unlimited extent.
Extended Workflow
A more extended workflow to back up a project without using the tiCrypt backup system is the following.
1. Create an encrypted drive for the project contents
To create an encrypted drive navigate to the tab in the section.
- Click the
Create new drive
icon located in the top right corner. - Follow the instructions from the create a drive section.
2. Create a new VM configuration for the project members only
To create a new VM configuration navigate to the tab, in the Virtual Machines
section.
- Click the the
Create configuration
icon in the top left. - Follow the instructions from the create a VM configuration section.
3. Tag the VM configuration with the appropriate project.
To tag the VM configuration with a project navigate to the tab, in the Virtual Machines
section.
- Select the connected VM you want to tag the project to.
- Click the
Three dots
button in the top right. - Click the
Set Project
option. - Follow the instructions from the set project (classify VM) section.
When you tag a VM configuration with a project, you tag the drive of the VM configuration.
4. Add project members to project-tagged VM
To add users to a VM configuration navigate to the tab, in the Virtual Machines
section.
- Select the virtual machine you want to add users to.
- Click the
User Management
card on the right panel. - Click the
Add User(s)
button at the top panel. - Follow the instructions from the add a user to VM Configuration section.
5. Transfer data from Vault to VM
To transfer files between VM and Vault navigate to the tab, in the Virtual Machines
section.
- Select the connected VM you want to transfer to/from.
- Click the
Transfer files to/from Vault
button in the center-right. - Follow the instructions from the set project (classify VM) section.
Each project member must transfer their own project-tagged
files and directories once they want to back them up into an encrypted project-tagged drive
.
